Eliminate impulse buys. These types of purchases can be death to your finances. These buys slowly suck money from your bank account, leaving little money for living expenses. Often times, individuals use credit cards to make these types of purchases. It is much easier to do so when one doesn’t have to pay with cash. However, the problems begin when individuals can’t afford to completely pay off the card at the end of the month. Slowly, the credit card balances begin to rise and individuals are only able to make the minimum payment. They are now trapped. This is why it is important to create a budget and stick to it. Individuals should stay away from stores, or frequent them far less if they tempt them to make impulse purchases.
Refuse to pay for anything on credit that you can not afford to pay cash for or pay off at the end of the month. If you can’t afford to pay it off in full at the end of the month, then don’t use credit to buy it. Otherwise you are only creating debt and using credit unwisely. You could end up paying for that new bed room furniture that you just had to have, for the next 10-15 years, if you purchase it with credit. Instead, save for these types of purchases and you will enjoy them much more. The only exception to this rule is if you need to use your credit card for emergencies that you aren’t financially prepared for. Life happens. However, attempt to avoid this, by putting away money each month.
In our society, you will likely need a credit card at one time or another. You may need it to book a hotel room or rent a car. Therefore, it may not make good sense not to have any credit cards at all. However, one credit card should be plenty and one should only use it when they have to.
Creating a budget will be vital in helping you get out of debt. It has been said that a budget is you telling your money what to do, while living without one is your money telling you what to do. The lack of a budget means a lack of control. You won’t be able to make the necessary payments and subsequently, you will have creditors breathing down your neck, and it will become much more difficult to make ends meet. This causes stress. It is very stressful to not be sure whether or not you will have enough money to make important payments at the end of the month because you haven’t budgeted.
Whatever you do, refuse to co-sign for anyone, especially for individuals who have not proven themselves trustworthy with money. You will only find yourself bailing them out and being forced to pay for their debt. If you can’t afford to do so, then politely decline when they ask.
Buying too much house can be another cause of pressing debt. If everything has to go perfectly in order for you to meet your mortgage payments, find another house.
